What is POAP?
POAP stands for Proof Of Attendance Protocol is a Non-fungible token (NFT) that proves the user has attended a certain event in the past. Events can be a party, concert, game, concert or something similar. Essentially, this can be thought of as badges sent to attendees’ wallet addresses as a reward for participating in certain activities.
Additionally, POAP can also be used as proof of a user’s achievements or to commemorate events in web3 games.
For example: Decentraland regularly sends POAPs to users to celebrate special in-game events such as the 10M user anniversary party organized by Metamask in 2021. Other projects also actively use POAPs as proof Attend their events such as: SushiSwap, Ethereum,..
The first POAP was created in 2021 at the ETHDenver conference as a reward to reward Hackers who participated in the hackathon. In 2020, POAP was migrated to Gnosis Chain (formerly xDai) to achieve faster speeds and lower transaction costs.
How Does POAP Work?
When users attend an event or achieve an achievement, they will receive a POAP. Basically, each POAP is minted via Smart Contract on the Gnosis Chain according to the ERC 721 standard. Therefore, each POAP has a serial number and records the user’s event attendance timestamp through Smart Contract.
There are 2 main groups of participants participating in POAP events including:
- Event Organizer: Organizers of events, fundraisers, and conferences can use POAP as rewards or to confirm event attendance.
- Event attendees: A digital badge is awarded to each attendee at any venue or event that offers a POAP as a token or souvenir. Attendees simply scan the QR code on the POAP with their mobile device or a device provided by the organizers to view the recorded information.
Additionally, each POAP is reserved for only one event, that is because each POAP represents an event and users cannot attend the same event twice. POAPs also have a slight difference compared to NFTs in that they are free and have no gas fees involved.
What Is POAP Used For?
The main purpose of POAP is to prove presence. Here are some key use cases of POAP:
- To access private events such as invitations to community meetings or AMA sessions, etc.
- Used as a collectible to prove the user attended a certain event.
- As a reward for achieving a certain achievement in a web3 game.
There are still countless use cases for POAP beyond the main utilities above. In addition, POAP is also used by traditional events such as Warner Music Group, US Open,…
